No.628~630   Culture Club        1980년초 혜성과 같이 등장한 Culture Club !!    1983년 발표한 싱글 'Karma Chameleon' 영국 싱글차트 1위를 하며 미국시장에서도    대단한 인기를 얻었던 곡입니다.      Culture Club 멤버들이 직접 작사·작곡한 이 곡으로 미국시장을 석권하는 행운을    누렸으며, 제26회 그래미 어워드에서 최우수 신인상을 수상, 영국 그룹으로서는 최초로    그래미상을 수상하였고, 3주간 정상을 차지한 곡이죠....      1982년 말 발표한 앨범「Kissing To Be Clever」에 수록된    'Do You Really Want To Hurt Me'는 1983년 초에 싱글 챠트 2위까지 오르게 됩니다.     이 곡은 흑인적인 휠링이 가미된 소울과 레게적인 리듬 비트가 가미된 경쾌한 곡으로,     보이 조지의 맑고 고운 목소리는 여성을 방불케 하고 있어 더욱 진한 멋을 느끼게 합니다.       세번째 곡 'The Crying Game'은 1986년 그룹 해체후 1993년 솔로로 컴백한 보이 조지가    부른 곡으로 영화 'Crying Game'의 OST로 잘 알려진 곡입니다.                         1981년 영국 런던에서 결성된 뉴웨이브(New Wave) 그룹 컬처 클럽(Culture Club)은 80년대 초반 8개의 UK차트 TOP 10 히트곡과 6개의 TOP 10 싱글을 내놓으며 영국에서 가장 파퓰러한 그룹의 하나가 되었다. 초창기 시절 이들의 음악은 주로 라디오 방송을 통해서만 알려졌지만 보이 조지(Boy George)의 카리스마적인 이미지와 여성스럽게 꾸민 외모를 앞세워 MTV의 힘을 등에 업고 비교적 수월하게 스타덤에 올랐다. 양성적인 외모에 현란한 의상을 즐겨 입고 진한 화장을 한 채 등장한 보이 조지의 모습은 MTV가 막 등장했던 시절 센세이션을 일으키기에 충분한 것이었다. 음반 [Colour By Numbers]가 나오고 얼마 지나지 않아 그룹의 상징인 Boy George는 "뉴스위크"지의 표지인물로 등장했다. 스스로 '성의 개척자' 임을 자부한 그는 여장차림과 인형과도 같은 '미모'로 인해 84,85년 매스컴의 표적이 되어 집중적으로 카메라 플래시를 받았다. 그만큼 그와 컬처 클럽에게는 비디오적 측면이 중요하게 대두되었다. 본명이 조지 오' 다우드(George O' Dawd)이며 1961년 복싱클럽 매니저의 아들로 태어난 보이 조지는 10대 시절 데이빗 보위(David Bowie), 티.렉스(T.Rex)같은 글램락(Glam Rock)의 영향을 받으며 성장했다. 한편 그는 1970년대말 포스트-펑크(Post-Punk)시대동안 런던의 클럽에서 커다란 인기속에 활동하기도 했었다. 전성기 시절에는 특유의 신랄한 재치로 공개석상에서 날카로운 발언을 함으로써 자신의 카리스마적 이미지에 일조하는 것을 즐기기도 했던 인물이다. 컬처 클럽은 타의 추종을 불허할만큼 날카로운 팝감각을 지니고 있었기에 전세계 팝계의 스포트라이트를 받을 수 있었다. 그러나 언제부턴가 이들은 MTV의 태도변화와 리드싱어 조지의 마약중독 등으로 내부불화를 겪다 1986년 뉴 웨이브시대의 고전으로 몇장의 싱글을 차트에 랭크시킨 후 해산해버린다. 이후 보이 조지는 93년에 영화 [크라잉 게임]의 주제가 "Crying Game"을 히트시키기도 했다.             Karma Chameleon     Desert loving in your eyes all the way.
